How to Care for Sofa Cushions: Covers, Filling and Drying

A sofa cushion has more than one component. Its cover, lining and filling may have different restrictions, and a zip does not automatically permit home removal or washing. Check the furniture instructions before deciding which part needs cleaning.
- Read cover and filling instructions separately.
- Do not machine wash a cover just because it has a zip.
- Keep a cushion out of use while damp.
In this guide
- Identify the component that needs attention
- Routine care and a small spill
- If the cover is explicitly washable
- When filling is affected
Identify the component that needs attention
| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| Outer cover | Removal, washing, local treatment and drying permissions. |
| Lining or barrier | Whether it must stay in place and must not be disturbed. |
| Foam or other filling | Liquid contamination, permitted treatment and drying feasibility. |
| Seams and trim | Colour, shrinkage and material restrictions different from the main fabric. |
For codes and symbols use the textile-code guide. The manufacturer can clarify a missing or incomplete label.
Routine care and a small spill
Use the approved dry maintenance tool and keep crumbs away from seams. For a spill, lift solids and blot liquid with a plain cloth without pressing it through the cover.
A permitted local product needs a hidden-area test and controlled application. Do not assume that washing instructions for bedding or a removable dining-chair cover apply to a fitted sofa cushion.
If the cover is explicitly washable
- Check the full label for cycle, temperature, product and drying restrictions.
- Remove it only through the permitted procedure without disturbing internal barriers.
- Wash according to those instructions; do not add an improvised stain recipe.
- Dry as specified, avoiding direct high heat or sunlight unless approved.
- Refit only as the manufacturer directs, with no unresolved dampness in the filling.
Some covers are intended to remain fitted even when they have a zip. If removal is prohibited or uncertain, ask before forcing it.
When filling is affected
Urine, a large drink spill or repeated over-wetting can affect more than the visible fabric. Read the urine guide for that particular problem and disclose the incident before booking.
An outer clean does not guarantee treatment of an inaccessible insert. Ask what the quote covers, whether the filling can be dried and whether replacement may be necessary.
Discuss the appropriate cleaning scope
Send the cushion and care-label details, including whether liquid reached the filling, so the suitable cleaning scope can be confirmed.
