Identify any tinting film, self-cleaning coating, leaded section or specialist finish. The manufacturer’s care instructions override a general household recipe. Protect nearby stone, painted surfaces, timber and seals from drips.

Is vinegar suitable for cleaning windows?
It can be suitable for some ordinary glass, subject to the window manufacturer’s approval. For its windows, Pella: glass and window cleaning describes a dilute white-vinegar solution and also stresses compatible cleaning tools. That does not make an identical mixture suitable for every coating, film, frame or seal.
Use the dilution specified for your product or a compatible labelled glass cleaner. Keep the solution off adjacent sensitive finishes, and never mix vinegar with bleach or another cleaner. Stronger acidity is not a reliable answer to every cloudy mark.
If the glass is unknown, coated or filmed, ask the supplier before using a household ingredient. Persistent staining, scratches or condensation between sealed panes may not be surface dirt that cleaning can remove.
A controlled cleaning sequence for accessible ordinary glass
- Remove loose dust and grit using a suitable soft tool. Clean compatible frame and sill surfaces first so they do not soil the finished pane.
- Prepare clean lint-free cloths, fresh solution and a clean rubber blade if the glass permits a squeegee. Protect the sill from runoff.
- Apply a modest amount of the approved cleaner. For small indoor panes, applying it to the cloth can help control drips.
- Clean from the top towards the bottom. If using a permitted squeegee, make overlapping passes and wipe the blade between them.
- Dry the edges and collect runoff with a separate clean cloth. Check the result once dry rather than polishing over dirt with the same wet cloth.
Specialist coatings can have different tool restrictions. Check the specific instructions before using this ordinary-glass sequence on them.
Why streaks keep appearing
- Solution drying too soon: direct sun or a hot pane gives you less time to remove it evenly.
- Dirty tools: a loaded cloth or blade spreads material back onto the glass.
- Too much product: extra cleaner can leave a film that needs removing.
- Frame runoff: dirt from an upper frame or seal can run across glass you have already finished.
- A different problem: surface damage or moisture inside a sealed unit will not behave like a removable streak.
Replace dirty cloths, check the blade for trapped grit and use separate cloths for frames and glass. Tea, newspaper and extra fragrance do not solve these process problems.
When to arrange window cleaning
Ask for help with high, fixed, exterior or awkwardly positioned windows, specialist coatings or work requiring access equipment. Tell the team about the window type, floor level, obstructions and which surfaces are included. Interior and exterior glass are separate scope questions, particularly in an end of tenancy booking.
